September 01, 2010 — Low Tidal Heights Explained by Eddy Patterns in the Sargasso Sea
Bermuda has been experiencing unusually low tides for the past several months. This recent variation is due to the propagation of a large cyclonic (anti-clockwise rotating) mesoscale eddy through Bermuda's local waters resulting in a local depression of mean sea level. Scientists at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) are constantly monitoring eddies in the Sargasso Sea using both remote sensing techniques and ship based observations from BIOS' research vessel Atlantic Explorer, particularly at two long-term open-ocean observation sites, Hydrostation 'S' and Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS), near Bermuda.

July 14, 2010 — BIOS Researcher Chosen For Prestigious Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
Dr. Kimberly Holzer, a researcher at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), has been selected as a finalist for the competitive 2011 Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship through the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Former NOAA Administrator Dr. John A. Knauss, a legend in oceanography and a Life Trustee at BIOS, had a pivotal role in shaping the Sea Grant program. Sea Grant works with coastal communities engaging the nation's top universities in conducting scientific research, education, training, and extension projects designed to foster science-based decisions about the use and conservation of our aquatic resources. This is an extremely prestigious award; candidates are first nominated by their local state Sea Grant office and then judged by a panel of world-leading scientists and policy makers.

June 1, 2010 — BIOS Director and Trustee to participate in Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Scientific Symposium
The British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater Horizon oil spill is having significant ecological impacts on the Gulf of Mexico and coastal United States. As the U.S. responds to this unprecedented spill, scientists will play a major role in the efforts to understand and combat the impacts of spill. The Consortium for Ocean Leadership - of which BIOS is a member institution - is co-hosting a symposium on June 3rd at Louisiana State University. The discussions will assist federal agencies (including U.S.'s EPA, NOAA and USGS) in identifying existing gaps in the scientific knowledge, in exploring the opportunities to fill those gaps, and in developing priorities for short- and long-term research into the impact of the spill on the Gulf ecosystems and human health.

December 10, 2009 — Ocean Chemistry Is The "Smoking Gun" Of Climate Change
This headline is the attention-grabber written by The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) in a news release issued on December 4, 2009. The oceans surrounding Bermuda are arguably the most comprehensively studied marine sites in the world. Established more than 100 ago, BIOS has maintained the longest continuous record of ocean observations - beginning in 1954 - in the world, demonstrating an increase in acidity due to human-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. "The phenomenon known as ocean acidification is real, and we've got the data to support it. It is the smoking gun of climate change," said Dr. Anthony H. Knap, Director of BIOS.

December 04, 2009 — Ocean Chemistry is the "Smoking Gun" of Climate Change; BIOS Offers Proof
In the wake of recent claims that climate change is no more than the product of manipulated data, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) stands by its research. "The phenomenon known as ocean acidification is real and we've got the data to support it," says Dr Anthony H. Knap, Director of BIOS.
