Bios in the UK:

Since its establishment BIOS has had close contact with and support from the UK. In order to acknowledge and cement these bonds, a sister charity - the UK Associates - was established in 1984. Despite the reputation of academic rigour and excellence, British Universities simply do not have the resources for their students to gain the practical experience of marine science techniques that would allow them to compete at a world-class level.

Bermuda's mid-Atlantic, blue-water environment and BIOS' unrivalled expertise and research resources give students from Britain a broad and comprehensive understanding of ocean-related sciences that simply cannot be achieved on their own coasts. In particular, we have built up close bonds with Southampton University - the leading centre for marine sciences in the UK. As of 2007 we will be offering a joint BIOS-Southampton PhD, producing outstanding individuals with a true academic and technical understanding of the ocean sciences. Cambridge University also provides funds for one of their students to study at BIOS each year; acknowledgement from these leading universities is testament to BIOS' long-standing reputation for excellence.

Aside from our partnerships with British Universities, we also welcome applications from talented and enthusiastic science students from the UK wishing to complete summer courses or internships with us. We are able to offer financial support and scholarships to individuals that we consider to be highly promising scientists. (Information and Application forms)

Bios UK Associates

Individuals in the UK who are interested in supporting BIOS may make tax-deductible gifts to sponsor students from Britain to study at BIOS. It is also possible to make restricted and non-restricted gifts to the research and running costs of the Institute in Bermuda. For information on how to become involved with BIOS from the UK, please contact Joanna Moore.
